Project 1: Modee
Design Overview
For this design exploration, I developed a multi-part, battery powered lamp intended to provided a warm ambient lighting. The project emphasized using light as a design element. Throughout this process, I experimented with form, materials, and assembly to understand how each decision influences the final design.
Inspiration
I focused on retro futuristic aesthetic, using rounded, pill like forms and steel finishes as the foundation for my sketch explorations.
Lamp Teardown
Examining the internal components such as switches, circuit boards, and material choices to understand the purpose of each component.
Sketches
Thumbnail sketches exploring early concept ideas, experimenting with soft edges and forms while considering lighting placement.
Further Sketches
Three sketches selected to move forward with as I begin exploring materiality and developing the 3D form.
Concept Model
Beginning full scale model with cardboard to study multi part components and consider light and battery placement.
Prototypes
Working with the actual materials and securing the LED strip in place to begin testing the push button mechanism.
Exploded View
Internal components arranged to highlight the placement of each part and demonstrate how they interact with each other.
Final Render
Rendered with a glossy plastic bulb and a steel backing to accurately represent material.
