Project 3: Cage Set
Spring 2025
For this design project, we were tasked to create a family form under the constraints of producing a common piece, I developed a resin-casted common piece and, within these parameters, designed a multi-part minimal chess set. From initial sketches to physical models, I gradually refined my ideas and built up to the final design.
Inspiration
For my design, I wanted to create a classic set while keeping it minimal. I explored family form and different color ways to guide the overall direction of the pieces.
Sketches
Start to explore form and begin incorporating the common piece in each set.
Initial Models
First iteration of models, beginning to explore the 3D form and identify what defines the piece. Working at full scale to study proportion.
Common Piece
The common piece is one element that intreated into each piece. I created the common piece by creating a mold casted in resin.
Cad Models
I modeled the full set on CAD to understand the form, scale and joinery. Once I finalized the design direction, I built the final iteration in fusion prepare building the final piece.
Process
The final pieces were laser cut into plywood and then finished with paint before being fully assembled.
Cast in white resin and framed in a wooden cage, the pieces are displayed to highlight their close detail.
